NIE stands for “Número de Identidad de Extranjero” in Spanish, which means Foreigner Identity Number. It is a unique, personal number assigned to foreign individuals by the Spanish authorities. This number is essential for many legal, financial, and administrative activities in Spain.

How to Apply for an NIE Number

Applications for an NIE cannot be submitted online. You must apply in person, either in Spain at the Local Police Station or Foreigner’s Office, or from abroad at the Spanish Consulate or Embassy in your country of residence.

In both cases, the application generally must be submitted in person either by you or by an accredited representative.

Required Documents to Apply for an NIE Number

1. EX‑15 Application Form

• Completed original and one copy of Formulario EX‑15 (official NIE request form), properly filled and signed.
• The form must state why you need the NIE (economic, professional, or social reasons).

2. Valid Passport

• Original passport (or national ID for EU citizens) plus a copy of the biographical data page (or front/back of ID).
• For applications submitted via a representative, only certified copies may be needed.

3. Form 790, Code 12 (Fee Payment Form)

• Modelo 790, filled out with the correct procedure selected (typically “Asignación de NIE…”). This is the official fee payment that allows the NIE application to be processed.
• Proof of payment/receipt from a bank must be included. Proof of payment must be done before the appointment — you cannot submit the NIE application without the bank‑stamped 790 receipt.

4. Proof of Your Reason for Requesting the NIE

• Official or credible documentation showing why you need an NIE. Examples include:

- Property purchase contract, reservation contract or title deed documents
- Bank letter/request for account opening
- Job offer letter or employment contract
- Business registration / company formation documents
- Notary letter for inheritance or legal transactions

The authorities must be able to verify that you have a valid economic, professional, or social reason.

5. Photo‑ID of Representative + Power of Attorney (if applying through a representative)

• If a representative applies on your behalf, they must present:

- Their original passport or ID and copy
- A power of attorney explicitly authorising them to submit your NIE application.

6. Additional Documents (if applicable)

Depending on your situation or the consulate/office, you might also be asked for:

• Proof of residence in the consular area (when applying abroad);
• Minor applicants: birth certificate or family book and guardian’s ID (original + copy)
• Appointment confirmation: printed confirmation of your scheduled appointment
• Passport photos: in some provinces or offices, a couple of passport photos may be requested as part of the file (often 32×26 mm color photos)

Note: Requirements can vary slightly by location or consulate, so always check exact local instructions before your appointment.

How Long Does it Take to Get a Spanish NIE Number?

When applying for an NIE number in Spain in person, the process is usually completed within a few days, though in some cases it can take up to 2 weeks.

Applications made through a Spanish embassy or consulate abroad typically take longer, often at least 2 months. For this reason, it’s wise to apply early — ideally about one month before you need your NIE.

After Approval...

Once approved, you will receive a written document showing your NIE — usually a paper certificate with:

• Your full legal name.
• Your NIE number (format: letter + 7 digits + letter).
• Your nationality and date of birth.
